ANFIBIO SOFA BED

Designer: Alessandro Becchi (Italy)

Design Year: 1971

The sleeper sofa Anfibio is probably the most famous sofa bed in the world. Designed by Alessandro Becchi together with the Giovannetti staff, it was first presented in 1970 during one of the most innovative fairs at that time: Eurodomus in Turin The following year it was already shown in one of the first editions of the “Salone del Mobile” in Milan, after which followed the introduction and the big success on international markets, New York first of all. The MoMa itself bought a piece for its permanent exhibition and, in the same year, it was selected and awarded for the prestigious “Compasso d’Oro”. Celebrated for its eroticism (Playboy America has made it an icon of Eros), loved for its multiple functions, which make it an indispensable companion of life, about 33.000 pieces have been produced up to today. Anfibio has been twice patented on international scale, for invention and ornament, and is part of permanent collections of the most important museums of modern art (above the MoMa New York at the Victoria & Albert Museum of London, the Triennale of London, the Vitra Design Museum and several others in the United States, Middle East and Australia). To the aesthetic content, which remained unvaried during the years and made Anfibio a cult object in its field, today many innovative technological features have joined, becoming so an even more original and functional furnishing element.
